Mountain Loop Highway, WA

The Mountain Loop Highway is another very easy drive that can be completed by most any vehicle. This winding, curving, excellently maintained back country dirt road is a real pleasure to drive. Views of the Cascade Mountains, plentiful hiking trails and several smaller branching forest roads gives one a full days adventure. Be sure to hike up to the Big Four Ice Caves. For the more technical overlanding enthusiast I recommend taking NF-49 towards the east. It meanders quite a ways up into the central Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Several excellent boondocking campsites are also to be found as you continue up NF-49. At the very end of NF-49 is a trailhead that goes quite a ways further up into the mountains. I didn’t get the name of the trail but it promises that it ends up in some glacial meadows. Heading north on the MLH you eventually come up to Darrington, WA. I took a left heading west on 530 which gives some amazing views of Whitehorse Mtn. Also of interest is Oso, WA, which was hit by a massive landslide on 22 March 2014. Oso mudslide
